Why This Plastic Surgeon Refuses to Perform Brazilian Butt Lifts (BBL)
The Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) has soared in popularity over the years, often celebrated for its transformative results. However, not all surgeons are on board with this trend. In fact, some plastic surgeons refuse to perform BBLs due to serious concerns about patient safety and the long-term consequences of the procedure.
High Risk, High Stakes
One of the most compelling reasons surgeons avoid performing BBLs is the alarming mortality rate associated with the procedure. In 2018, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) advised its members to stop performing BBLs after it was found to have the highest death rate of any cosmetic surgery. The danger lies in the procedure itself: fat is removed from one part of the body and injected into the buttocks, but if the fat is mistakenly injected into or near large blood vessels, it can cause fat embolisms, which can be fatal. This risk is magnified when inexperienced practitioners perform the surgery in non-sterile environments, leading to infections and other complications.

Lack of Regulation and Unqualified Practitioners
Another issue highlighted by experts is the rise of unqualified practitioners offering cheaper alternatives like the “liquid BBL.” Many of these procedures are advertised on social media, creating a false sense of security for potential clients. These cheaper options often involve dangerous shortcuts, leading to severe complications such as sepsis, corrective surgeries, and, in some cases, death.
Surgeons emphasize that these procedures should only be performed by board-certified professionals with access to proper surgical facilities. Unfortunately, many clients are unaware of the risks, tempted by the promise of quick, affordable results, and influenced by the portrayal of the procedure as glamorous on social media.
Newer, Safer Alternatives
In light of these dangers, some surgeons recommend less invasive alternatives like Superficial Gluteal Lipofilling, which uses ultrasound to guide fat injections more precisely, reducing the risk of complications. This method is far safer than traditional BBLs but still provides patients with natural-looking results.
Think Twice Before a BBL
While the appeal of a curvier figure is understandable, the risks associated with BBLs cannot be ignored. Many plastic surgeons advise potential patients to explore safer alternatives and to be wary of the risks posed by unqualified practitioners. The importance of choosing a certified, experienced surgeon cannot be overstated, as it can literally be the difference between life and death.
If you’re considering a BBL, do your research, consult with a certified surgeon, and weigh the potential risks against the benefits.
